Dining Room Rug Placement Guide
Use this guide alongside the size chart above to choose the right rug for your dining space and get the placement right the first time.
Step 1 — Measure Your Table
Measure the full length and width (or diameter, for round tables) of your dining table. Write these down — you'll add chair clearance to both dimensions in the next step.
Step 2 — Add Chair Pull-Out Clearance
When a chair is pulled out for seating, it typically extends 18–24 inches (46–61 cm) beyond the table edge. To keep all four chair legs on the rug — even when pushed back — add 24 inches (61 cm) to each side of your table measurement:
| Table Size | Add 24" per side | Minimum Rug Size |
|---|---|---|
| 36" × 60" (3×5 ft) | +48" W, +48" L | 84" × 108" (7×9 ft) |
| 36" × 72" (3×6 ft) | +48" W, +48" L | 84" × 120" (7×10 ft) |
| 40" × 84" (3.5×7 ft) | +48" W, +48" L | 88" × 132" (8×11 ft) |
| 42" × 96" (3.5×8 ft) | +48" W, +48" L | 90" × 144" (8×12 ft) |
Tip: If your space is tight, 18" per side is the absolute minimum — but 24" is strongly recommended.
Step 3 — Rectangular vs. Round Tables
Rectangular tables pair best with rectangular rugs. Match the rug proportions to the table: a long, narrow table suits a 8×10 or 9×12 rug; a shorter table suits a 6×9 or 8×10.
Round tables pair naturally with round rugs. Apply the same 24" clearance rule to the diameter: a 48" (4 ft) round table needs at least a 96" (8 ft) round rug. A square rug can also work — size it as you would a rectangular table of equivalent dimensions.
Step 4 — Front-Leg vs. All-Leg Placement
There are two accepted approaches for dining chairs on a rug. All-leg placement (Option A) is the standard for dining rooms:
| Option A — All Legs On (Recommended) | Option B — Front Legs On |
|---|---|
|
▭ 🪑 [====TABLE====] 🪑 ▭
All four chair legs remain on the rug at all times — including when pulled out. Requires a larger rug (minimum 24" clearance per side). Feels most cohesive and protects floors fully. Best for: Formal dining rooms, open-plan spaces, large rugs |
🪑 [====TABLE====] 🪑
Only the front two chair legs sit on the rug. The rug can be smaller (18" clearance per side from the table edge). Visually anchors the space but chairs may catch the rug edge when moved. Best for: Smaller spaces, budget constraints, transitional styling |

The Design Story
This rug displays a classic Persian Heriz medallion design, with an ivory lobed central medallion and navy rosette set on a rust field framed by rose‑pink spandrels. Stylized flowers, leafy vinery, and angular motifs in green, gold, and cream fill the field, while a deep navy border with repeating cartouches and rosettes reflects the bold geometry and village character of Heriz weaving from northwest Iran.

Yes. Our every rug is hand knotted by skilled artisans using traditional weaving techniques, making each piece unique in character and detail.
Because each rug is handmade, slight variations in color, pattern, and texture are natural and are considered part of the rug’s unique character. We photograph every rug carefully to represent its appearance as accurately as possible.
New wool rugs may shed lightly during the first few months of use. This is a normal characteristic of natural wool fibers and will gradually diminish with regular vacuuming.
